The engineering process is a set of steps engineers follow to find a solution to a problem. This process includes finding an objective in the first place, determining constraints, and then creating, designing and testing. This is a critical component of every project at TWI. It helps us ensure that our projects meet high performance and safety requirements. This is particularly crucial for New York City projects as they must meet the strictest requirements.

During this phase students research the issue they’re confronted with in order to understand what the challenge is and to gather data. This is an open, student-centered approach to science, which shifts classrooms away from traditional instruction.

At this moment, students brainstorm ideas on how they can solve the problem. This can be accomplished using whiteboards, software or discussions. Some ideas may not work, but that’s ok because it gives them the chance to try different ideas to find the most effective solution.

After reviewing the results of their research and brainstorming, the group decides on a create and build. This can be done on paper using CAD software or through a physical or virtual prototype. This is a great option for students as they can make a tangible prototype that will allow them to test their solutions.

This is where the rubber meets the road for engineers since they must stay within constraints that are imposed on them like cost, time, tools, resources and many more. Engineers must also keep in mind that their solutions must be safe and efficient so they can be used in the real world.
